Russia is pulling Vietnam into a bigger game with China that most people don’t see.

Russia and China appear to be closely aligned. But that alignment is only temporary.

Two ambitious powers sharing a common border cannot maintain peace indefinitely.
Conflict will return. It is not a question of if, but when.

Look at the map. Vietnam sits right next to China.
When that moment comes, Russia will use Vietnam as a strategic lever.

This is the real reason behind Russia’s continued supply of weapons and nuclear energy cooperation with Vietnam.

When a Russia–China conflict unfolds, Moscow will not need to persuade Hanoi.
It will simply activate what has already been put in place.

Vietnam will become a position from which pressure can be applied against China.
Perhaps even the starting point of a conflict few are willing to imagine.

The fear small countries never talk about. The most frightening thing is not war. It is facing war alone. Small countries often rely on powerful nations to guarantee their security. But alliances only last as long as interests align.

In 1938, Britain and France did not defend Czechoslovakia against Nazi Germany.
In 1975, the United States withdrew from Vietnam.
In 2021, the U.S. left Afghanistan.

Each time, the same lesson returned. When the cost of war becomes too high, even the strongest allies may walk away. That is why small countries constantly try to become more strategically important. Because the greatest fear in international politics is not war. It is being left alone when the war begins.

If war is the worst outcome in international politics, why do countries still decide to start one?

In 2022, Russia launched a military campaign in Ukraine.
From the outside, the decision looked extremely risky.

But from Moscow’s perspective, the real issue was time.

Ukraine was moving increasingly closer to the West.
NATO weapons were beginning to appear.
Ukraine’s military was becoming better trained and better equipped.

If Russia waited another ten years, the balance of power could change completely. Ukraine might even become a direct threat to Russia.

In Russia’s strategic thinking, the window of opportunity was closing.

And when a country believes that waiting will only make it weaker, war can begin to look rational.

Wars rarely start because someone truly wants them.

They begin when one side believes that doing nothing is more dangerous than taking action.

If no one wants war, why is every nation preparing for war?

The United States says it is preserving peace in the Taiwan Strait. China says it is defending its sovereignty. Vietnam says it is modernizing for self-defense. Everyone insists: we do not want conflict.

Yet the United States increases arms sales. China expands military exercises. Military bases grow. Navies become stronger. When one side strengthens its defenses, the other sees a threat. And it responds by preparing even more. No one believes they are the aggressor. Everyone believes they are simply defending themselves.

This is the trap of war. Wars do not begin because someone longs for them. They begin when one side believes that if it does not strike first, it will lose.

And when fear outweighs restraint, war is no longer a choice.
It becomes inevitable.

No country is truly neutral in a global power competition.
There are only nations that have not been fully trusted to become enduring allies.

Vietnam shifted sides once.

In politics, once is enough.

From Beijing’s perspective, Vietnam forgot what China once provided.

That memory has left Beijing with a permanent layer of strategic skepticism.

So is Vietnam’s neutrality today a wise strategy of balance-of-power diplomacy?

Or is it the price of a history that makes no bloc willing to place a long-term bet?

Treating China’s preparation to attack Taiwan as someone else’s problem could be the greatest strategic mistake small nations make.

If China attacks Taiwan, the war will not stop at the Strait. The world will split into two competing power blocs. And at that moment, you will no longer be fully free in your decisions.

Align with China.
Align with the United States and Taiwan.These are difficult choices.

But more dangerous than choosing is failing to prepare.

Because if you do not act proactively, circumstances will decide for you. And when you are forced to choose under pressure, it is rarely the best option. Those who fail to move early often enter negotiations from a weaker position.

Gradually, you no longer make decisions based on your own interests, but in response to external pressure.

Stay alert. The right to self-determination does not disappear in a single shock. It erodes over time until the choices left are no longer truly yours.

If China were forced to use force, where would it strike? A small island like Taiwan?Or a neighboring country right along its border, like Vietnam?

Many people believe the answer is obvious. But on the strategic chessboard, Taiwan and Vietnam represent moves with comparable levels of risk.

With Taiwan, this is not just a territorial issue. It is a strategic position capable of reshaping the entire regional balance. That also makes it the option with the highest cost and the greatest risk.

So what about Vietnam?

Not a full-scale invasion. At least not yet.
The first phase would be the gray zone. At sea.

But the real question is this: Between Taiwan and Vietnam, which one, if attacked, would actually change the rules of the game?

Because in strategy, not every target is worth striking.

China is preparing for war, but it is not yet ready to strike. When a country is about to launch an invasion, the warning signs are usually clear: war propaganda, a legal pretext, large-scale troop deployments near the border, and the construction of field hospitals close to the front lines. So far, those signs have not fully appeared in China. What China has already done is reach a strategic conclusion that launching a war is necessary, and it is now preparing to endure sanctions and economic isolation once an attack takes place.

That is why, up to this point, China remains at the threshold of war but has not crossed it. The attack has not begun, but the preparation to absorb its consequences has been underway for a long time. There is a country preparing for blockade, for sanctions, and for being cut out of the global financial system.
And that only happens when a nation is preparing for war.

Since 2022, China has accumulated more than fifty percent of the world’s wheat reserves, nearly sixty percent of global corn stocks, strategic oil reserves sufficient for months under blockade, and a steadily growing volume of gold.

It has reduced its exposure to the U.S. dollar and Western assets.
Shifted trade toward safer partners.
Built alternative payment systems.
Tightened control over capital flows and strategic exports.

And now, it is seeking to gradually replace the role of the U.S. dollar with the Chinese yuan.

This is not economic reform.
This is preparation for a day when China may be cut off from the world.

War does not arrive by surprise.
It always announces itself in advance.

When you see missiles in the sky, the war has already been decided long before.

Before launching a real war, countries always leave behind warning signs that cannot be hidden.

Large scale food stockpiling.
Long term energy reserves.
A sharp increase in gold holdings.
Reducing exposure to assets that could be frozen.
Shifting trade toward safe partners.
Building alternative payme nt systems.
Tightening control over capital flows and strategic exports.

Only after that came war propaganda, legal preparations, troop deployments, and finally the construction of field hospitals.

Every major war in modern history begins in the same way.
Not with weapons.
But with oil reserves, food reserves, and gold reserves.

The war in Ukraine was not a surprise.
Russia had been preparing for it for at least three years.
But the world largely ignored the warning signs.

In 2019, Russia began rapidly increasing its gold reserves. In 2020, it sharply reduced its exposure to the U.S. dollar in its foreign reserves. By the end of 2021, just two months before the invasion, Russia’s total reserves reached a record high of six hundred and forty billion dollars.

At the same time, Russia signed long term energy contracts with China, expanded pipelines toward Asia, and steadily reduced its dependence on Europe.

On the ground, it moved ammunition depots, fuel supplies, and logistics bases closer to the Ukrainian border. In the media, it began portraying Ukraine as a fascist state.

The war in Ukraine was not unexpected. It had been carefully prepared for, years in advance.
