China’s Real Target Is Not Vietnam
China is preparing for war. And for many, the first target would be Vietnam, not Taiwan. What decides the outcome is not what is easier to take, it is what carries the greatest strategic value.
Controlling Vietnam would give China regional tactical advantages, but it would not create a global strategic shock.
Taiwan is different. Taiwan is home to TSMC, the place the world relies on to manufacture the most advanced chips. From artificial intelligence and modern weapons to the technological infrastructure of the global economy.
If China were to gain control of Taiwan, the global technology supply chain would be shaken immediately.
At the same time, Beijing would have an opportunity to break out of the island chain that has constrained its power in the Pacific. The reward is not territory, but the ability to shape the rules, across technology, military power, and global security. And if China wants to change the rules of the game, the target is not Vietnam. It is Taiwan.
